Alterlaa

Housing Estate

I sometimes get to explore intriguing corners of my own city for the Vienna Tourism Board. And sometimes, such a job simply ends up with a dip in a roof top swimming pool, of which there are seven in the Alterlaa residential park.

I arrived to the estate by bike riding along the „Liesing“ river.

But you can easily reach Alterlaa by subway as well.

At this massive estate keeping an overview on your bearings is essential.

Architect Harry Glück aimed to create an oasis at Alterlaa, despite the countless residential units. He achieved this through the mandatory greenery of the balconies and the spacious garden areas. Additionally, this small city within the city offers a wide range of recreational opportunities.

The swimming pools not only serve for a quick refreshment but also double as water tanks for the sprinkler system in case of a fire. I had the opportunity to learn this and much more from resident Michael, who kindly guided me through the complex.
